leucodermaSome people develop unusual spots of white pigmentation on their skin. These commonly appear as patches and are often referred to as Leucoderma by physicians. Melanin is an important pigment that is found on the surface of the skin. In fact, it is the very same pigment that decides the coloration of the skin.

The production of melanin is usually pre-programmed into our DNA. Leucoderma is a serious condition – not because it can lead to any fatalities – but because of the fact that it often affects the young and they will have a tough time being outside. The odd coloration of their skin can lead to ridicule by the others and hence, it is important to take the adequate precautions on treating it. In the rest of the sections, we will look closely into the same condition.

Where Does Leucoderma Occur?

It has been noted that Leucoderma occurs on the unprotected parts of the skin. The usual diagnostic procedure is to take a sample of the skin and test it for the presence of skin coloration compounds under a microscope.  It is recommended to get in touch with an expert dermatologist if you suspect of the condition. There are other sets of skin ailments that can display the same set of symptoms (white patches on the surface of the skin). Hence, it is imperative to find out whether the ailment is indeed Leucoderma. At times, the patient might be subjected to advanced blood tests. It can help in diagnosing whether the hormone levels are within the desired limits. Malfunctioning of the thyroid gland is also known to cause the formation of such white patches on the skin.

Treatment Options For Leucoderma:

It is disappointing to note that a large set of procedures that are used to treat Leucoderma are often ineffective. The traditional curative procedures rarely produce any effects. In the recent times, it has been noted that herbal treatment options such as Ayurveda can bring about some changes. Laser therapy is the most common form of treatment that is often prescribed in the western countries. Typically, a dermatologist can offer productive suggestion such as skin creams and ointments to eradicate the condition mildly. It is surprising to learn that the scientists are still looking into the causes of Leucoderma. There are no predefined demographic patterns (like the other ailments that affect the skin). Some of the latest theories suggest that the immunity system destroys the skin pigmentation cells due to a case of mistaken identity.
