The body conatins a store of iron which is used up in bulding red blood cells. Everytime we donate blood our body looses around 250mg of iron.
The total stock of iron decrease but it gradually build up again with time.

before donating blood, doctor checks the iron level in blood. If it is surplus then only you are allowed to donate blood. The body conatins a store of iron and which gets supply from your diet and used up in making RBC.

Hematocrit level is checked before blood donation and it is ensured that the person should have minimum 38% hematocrit level. Minimum hematocrit level of 38% has been set by the FDA to ensure donors have enough blood to give and that they also have enough iron available in their bodies to make more blood after they donate.
